Modify /a/ toward /uh/ as you ascend.
In bel canto, vowels migrate toward more neutral /uh/ or /aw/ as you ascend — the open /a/ that worked at the bottom chokes off resonance at the top. Each trial: we play a 5-note ascending scale, you echo it on /a/ but let the vowel round on the top notes.
