Weeks 11-12 · repertoire
8 beats. No drone. End on the tonic.
Why this matters: every previous lesson gave you a guide pitch or drone. A cappella singing is the test that you can hold the tonic in your head across a phrase and resolve there from memory. This is what folk and choral traditions, from bel canto to Kodály, treat as the real proof of internal pitch.
8 trials. Each: hear a 1-3-5-3-1 arpeggio to set the key, then sing any 8-beat phrase that ends back on the tonic. After a 2-beat count-in the click drops out — you carry the pulse alone. Pass = final note within ±35¢ AND pulse drift ≤ 8%. 5/8 masters the session.
